Whoopee

This Eddie Cantor musical really hasn't aged well. It's racist against Native Americans and African Americans. It's known for having Paulette Goddard and Betty Grable in the chorus when they were just trying to make it. The score is ok with "My Baby just cares for me" and "Making Whoopee." This started Busby Berkeley's career.

Romance of the Limberlost

I watched this movie because I was curious about Jean Parker. She's ok here. It's about a simple minded girl who is mocked by her community. She falls in love with a lawyer. Things get bad when the family arranges her to be married to someone she doesn't love. He is accidentally killed by the girl's friend who is defended by her lawyer. Allmovie gave this a one. I think that's too harsh. I give it a 2/5. For some reason it reminded me of Green Mansions. It was based on a book and I have a feeling it's better.

A woman's Face

I saw the Joan Crawford movie remake first and I like both but the Swedish version was more poetic. The beautiful Ingrid Bergman plays a disfigured criminal who receives plastic surgery. She starts to change her ways. She becomes a governess for a little boy and the father and the boy take a shine to her. But her past comes back to haunt her and the crime involves the boy. I noticed the American and Swedish endings were different. Ingrid Bergman was only twenty-three in this, already an accomplished actress.

Lady Behave

This stars two underrated actresses Sally Eilers and the child actor Marcia Mae Jones. Sally Eilers friend gets married to a millionaire while drunk but she is already married. Sally Eilers tries to make everything right and pretends to be her friend in the process only while doing so. Only she falls in love with the guy. Marcia Mae Jones plays the guy's kid. Sally Eilers wasn't given enough roles to truly prove her talent in Hollywood but she is more than adequate here. I found this on youtube. It was ok.

The Chase

This was based off a book by Cornell Woolrich. It is about a chauffeur who falls for his mobster's girl Michele Morgan. She wants to run away to Havana and he agrees to help her out. Unfortunately he suffers from hallunications and not everything goes according to plan. It's not the best noir I've seen but it was all right. Like always Peter Lorre steals the show.

Make haste to live

This was an ok noir. Dorothy McGuire is terrified after she learns that her ex-husband has just gotten out of prison. He went to prison for her murder only she never went forward with the news that she was alive. She just took her daughter and ran for it. He pretends to be the uncle of the daughter while making clear to Dorothy that she is going to get what's coming to her. There's a lot of tension in the movie but it had a cop out ending. It could of, should have been better. Still it's 3 out of 5, an average movie.

A Girl in a Million

This dated British film could have been better. It's about a man who leaves his nagging wife to room with some men. He comes across a dumb girl and falls in love. SPOILER: Once she starts to talk again, she's a nagger too. The film has a bleak cynical view of women. If they didn't make Joan Greenwood a nagger the film could have been an ok British comedy. It's a shame because the performances in this movie were good. The film leaves an aftertaste.

Ladybug Ladybug

This was a good movie by the writer (Eleanor Perry) and director (Frank Perry) of David and Lisa. While it wasn't as amazing as David and Lisa it was all right. A nuclear attack warning goes off at a rural school so the children are sent home for the day. Tension happens as the teachers and the children wonder if the nuclear attack is really for real. Some of the children show selfishness and cruelty towards each other as the day goes by. Apparently some of the writing by the children was improvisating by the actors. I'm glad this was made in black and white as that help creates the bleak mood of the movie. It's worth a watch.

Blind Date

This was ok but the worst of the Joseph Losey movies I've been watching lately. This is about a painter who is accused of the murder of the model he was having an affair with. I thought Micheline Presle did a good job. I liked her in Devil in the Flesh. It was nice seeing her play the older woman. There are plenty of twists and turns. Like I said it was worth watching but not one of Joseph Losey's best.

The Sleeping Tiger

I've been watching Joseph Losey's movies lately and I've been enjoying myself. This one is about a patient that has an affair with his therapist's wife. Only the therapy works and the wife doesn't handle the breakup well. There are fine performanes by all. I've always felt Alexis Smith was underrated and Dick Bogarde plays a bad boy well. I like how the therapist isn't necessarily a good guy either (he's cheating too) and how that all builts up to the film's conclusion.
