The H-Man

I have to admit I was hoping for I live in fear part 2.  This Japanese movie is about a nuclear slime monster.  It's not even cheesy.  Actually, I found it uninvolving.  It was a disappointment.  The nightclub singer sang ok though.

The Shock

I haven't watched Nomads of the North yet but I enjoyed The Shock.  In this one, Chaney plays a character that has some redeeming qualities.  He plays a cripple who goes back to his old criminal ways just to help out the father of the girl he loves.  Lon Chaney was such a talented actor, very different from the usual handsome leading role, usually always playing villains.  It's too bad he died when talkies were just starting out.  Who knows what would have happened further in his career.  Still, he was a king of the silents, especially horror.

Johnny Apollo/Day-Time Wife

I watched two movies in this Tyrone Power collection.  He was definitely a charismatic good looking man.  I watched Johnny Apollo and Day-Time Wife.  Of the two I like Day-Time Wife the most.  In Day-Time Wife the lovely Linda Darnell starts to wonder if her husband is cheating on her with his secretary.  So she finds herself a job as a secretary herself to see just what's going on in the workforce.  Of course, her husband finds out and there are complications.  It was a cute fluffy movie.  In Johnny Apollo Tyrone finds himself slipping into crime which doesn't satisfy his father Edward Arnold who happens to be behind bars.  Edward has become a reformed criminal.    The movie also stars Dorothy Lamour who sings a number of songs in the movie.  She always brought so much to the silver screen.  She also does a good job of being Tyrone Power's devoted girlfriend.

Storm Warning

Ginger Rogers is on the way to visit her sister Doris Day when she witnesses a Ku Klux Klan murder.  She finds out that Doris' husband is one of the leaders of the group.  Rogers is torn by her duty for justice and her desire to stick by her sister's side.  Ronald Reagan plays the D.A. who wants Ginger to tell the truth but the town is pretty corrupt and downright scary.  Ginger is in a dilemma.  Eventually, even Doris Day sees what a creep her husband is.  I liked this movie.  This was a major change for Doris Day who just did fluff before this movie.  I think it prepared for Love me or leave me.   Not only that it presents a dramatic role for the future president Ronald Reagan.  Overall it's worth a watch.

Three Secrets

A boy is injured and his parents have just died.  However three women who gave away their baby on the same day as his birth wonder if the boy is theirs.  Each of the women have a past and a story.  The acting in this was pretty good.  Not all the women fit the stereotypical image of women in the 50's.  Patricia Neal for example seems like a woman who can stand on her two feet.  But all of the women were vulnerable at one time in their lives.  The main reason why I liked this movie was Eleanor Parker.  She was one of the best actresses of the 50's.  She shouldn't just be remembered as the villain in The Sound of Music.

Oliver Twist

This is a good adaptation of the poor boy who just wanted to eat more.  The reason why I liked it was that it featured a young brunette, Diana Dors.  She's at the beginning of the movie and plays Oliver's mother.  I'm a fan of hers.  It also features Alec Gunness who is mostly known for Star Wars despite starring in some of England's best movies in the 50's.  To me though director David Lean reached his peak with Lawrence of Arabia
