Bride by Mistake

This is a remake of The Richest Girl in the World only the actors are nowhere as good as Miriam Hopkins and Joel McCrea.  In this movie, a rich woman has her secretary pose as her to see if the new guy in her life is not a golddigger.  I watched this with my sister.  She didn't say anything about the Hopkins movie but in this one she was annoyed.  My sister said they were all liars.  She also thought that Ann Rutherford would have better in the main role.  I think that is a possibility.  See the original instead.

Crisis

This is a completely different role than the usual Cary Grant movie.  He's not a charming dashing guy in this.  He plays a doctor who has to help a South American tyrant played by Jose Ferrer who has a brain tumor.  He is really not a likable guy.  The movie also stars Signe Hasso, an actress I've seen a few times lately. I'm becoming a fan of hers. (So far my favorite movie of hers is A Scandal in Paris.) Anyway, I think Cary Grant fans might like this since it shows his range as an actor.

The Male Animal

Olivia DeHavilland stars in this mediocre comedy.  I've never seen Olivia in a comedy so it was different.  However, I didn't care for the picture.  Henry Fonda plays her dweeby husband.  Jack Carson plays her former football lover.  There's also a message about freedom of speech which Henry Fonda challenges at the end of the movie.  If you want to watch a superior comedy from Henry Fonda watch The Lady Eve.

Private Hell 36

Steve Cochran plays a cop that is crooked and steals money at a crime scene.  His honest partner can't stand what happened.  However, he must suffer the rumors that something went wrong at the crime scene just like his partner.  Ida Lupino plays Steve Cochran's lounge singer girlfriend.  This was just ok.  Ida Lupino co-wrote this screenplay.  Her best movie though is The Bigamist and is worth watching over this.

The Richest Girl in the World

Miriam Hopkins plays a rich debutante.  She uses a brunette Fay Wray as her stand in. (Fay looks better as a blonde.)  Fay is really her secretary.  Miriam plays her secretary and Fay the richest girl to test Joel McCrea.  Does he really love her?   On old movie boards, Miriam is always criticized.  She wasn't good enough looking, etc.  But I love Miriam Hopkins.  She was nominated for Becky Sharp but frankly, that movie isn't that good.  It's best to watch this or the daring Design for Living for a better look at Miriam's skills.

The Dark Mirror

Olivia De Havilland plays twins in this noir.  One is evil and murdered someone.   The other is sweet.  A psychiatrist has to interview the girls for multiple sessions.  It isn't long before he's in love with the sweet one but will the evil one like that?  It is apparent that Olivia De Havilland loves doing this role.  She's good in it.

Sunday Dinner for a Soldier

I felt this movie was all right. A poor family is looking forward to feeding a soldier for dinner.  When John Hodiak comes Anne Baxter starts to have romantic feelings for him. (The two actors got married later on.)  This was made during World War II and probably was good entertainment for people going through that harsh time period.  Charles Winninger steals the movie as the grandfather.  He's the reason to watch this.

In the Heat of the Night

I felt like watching another Sidney Poitier movie after I watched To sir with Love.  I watched this ten years ago and gave it a 2 on Netflix.  I've changed my mind.  It's a better movie now.  Sidney Poitier plays a homicide detective who gets thrown in jail.  However, things quickly change when it turns out he can help solve a case.  Rod Steiger, who won the Oscar for his role, in this movie can't stand Sidney but the two of them put aside their differences to solve the crime.  I don't know if this should have won the Oscar in 1967 though.  Bonnie and Clyde and The Graduate, also nominated for best picture, were very memorable movies.  It was just a really good year for movies.

To Sir with Love

To Sir, With Love

This is one of the better teacher movies that have been made.  Sidney Poitier plays a teacher who is teaching some rough kids among the working class in London.  He has to deal with discipline and one of his students also has a crush on him.  Poitier does a good job.  At the end of the movie, he has to decide between an engineering job coming up or if he will continue teaching.  This movie introduced me to Lulu, the redhead in this movie who sings the title song. (I think it's her best song.)  I love music from British female singers of the 60's so I would have probably got around to discovering her.  When I watched this for the first time when I was 17 though I wasn't into that genre yet.   She was one of the first I bought.

They came to blow up America

George Sanders plays a German who becomes a Nazi but is really working for the Americans, a secret he even keeps from his parents.  The Germans find out eventually but he's safe by the end of the movie.  George Sanders is pretty good in this.  Anna Sten has a little role in this. Anna Sten was a Russian actress known for her silent movies mostly.  I really liked her in Girl with a hatbox.  That was her best movie.

Fog over Frisco

Bette Davis gets involved with some gangsters and gets murdered.  Her sister Margret Lindsay tries to uncover the truth. She gets kidnapped but the movie wraps it all up by the end. The only thing I really want to change about this movie is that Bette Davis wasn't enough in it.  She does a good job.

Claudia

Claudia is an immature girl married to an older man.  She later finds out she's pregnant.  Not much happens in this movie.  The only real reason to watch is if you are a fan of Dorothy McGuire.
